Jefferson Beauregard Sessions Goes to California to Denounce Sanctuary Policy As Akin to Secession

Attorney General Jeff Sessions flew to California yesterday to insult that state’s elected leaders. After filing a lawsuit challenging California’s Sanctuary State policies, Sessions held what was essentially a press conference attacking Gov. Jerry Brown. Sessions demanded that state policing policies be subordinated to ICE. He said that declaring California a Sanctuary was akin to secession by Southern white racists in 1860.

Jerry Brown responded in a press conference of his own denouncing Sessions’s remarks. The governor said that “to come out here and engage in a political stunt, make wild accusations, many of which are based on outright lies, particularly a fellow coming from Alabama talking to us about secession and protecting human and civil rights.”

California’s Attorney General Xavier Becerra told reporters that “California is in the business of public safety. We are not in the business of deportation.”

Jefferson Beauregard Sessions is named after two heroes of pro-Confederate white supremacists, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard. Sessions has been a defender of preserving the statues of Davis and Beauregard. Considering his sympathy for the Slaveholders Republic, one wonders if the attorney general meant the comparison as a compliment to California.
