Today is the first day of Green Light implementation and several Department of Motor Vehicle Offices have seen an increase in people applying for licenses as immigrants come forward to start the long process of becoming licensed drivers. As anyone who has ever applied for a license for the first time knows, taking the learner’s permit test and the driving test can take weeks, and license issuance may take longer.
One negative development were are seeing is scam operators claiming that they are agents who can expedite the process. In Hempstead, at least one company is charging $1,000 to help immigrants obtain a license. Such “assistance” is not needed. Here is some guidance on this from the New York Immigration Coalition.
