Alt-Right D.C. Gathering Greets Trump Victory With Sieg Heil Salute

Over the weekend the Alt-Right, which found a platform for its racist propaganda on Steve Bannon’s Breitbart News, assembled in Washington to celebrate the victory of its avatar Donald Trump.

Richard B. Spencer is the intellectual leader of the formerly underground movement. He addressed the assembled racists. According to The New York Times:

He railed against Jews and, with a smile, quoted Nazi propaganda in the original German. America, he said, belonged to white people, whom he called the “children of the sun,” a race of conquerors and creators who had been marginalized but now, in the era of President-elect Donald J. Trump, were “awakening to their own identity.” As he finished, several audience members had their arm outstretched in a Nazi salute. When Mr. Spencer, or perhaps another person standing near him at the front of the room — it was not clear who — shouted, “Heil the people! Heil victory,” the room shouted it back.

Spencer coined the term Alt-Right and he says that it is a movement whose core idea is white identity. He told the audience that “America was, until this last generation, a white country designed for ourselves and our posterity…It is our creation, it is our inheritance, and it belongs to us…To be white is to be a creator, an explorer, a conqueror.”
