We followed that up with an intimate film screening at Patchogue’s Artspace Building.

This year’s second annual National Welcoming Week was a huge success here on Long Island.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone joined us in commemorating this momentous event in the county. We’re glad to have him onboard as an ally.

“I thank Long Island Wins for their tremendous work on Welcoming Week, and for their work in helping immigrants in our communities feel welcomed,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone during a ceremony commemorating the week. “This is very important for us in Suffolk County, because it sends a message to all of our residents, both native- and foreign-born, that they are all important, and that we appreciate all of the contributions that they make to our community.”

Long Island Wins, Welcoming Long Island, and First Person American joined together to present What’s Your Story?, a community event screening 9 short films that explore personal narratives from immigrants about the people who welcomed them and changed their lives forever.

Food was served to attendees, who joined with us to watch the short films. What followed was a lively discussion that got everyone involved, including Patchogue Mayor Paul Pontieri. We ended the night by accepting a proclamation from Mayor Pontieri in celebration of National Welcoming Week in the village.
