Many people believe that undocumented immigrants do not pay taxes, a belief that is entirely false. In order to better explain the truth as Tax Day approaches, Fusion shot a video with various undocumented immigrants explaining how they pay income and other taxes, and what services they do or do not get.
Undocumented immigrants can obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), an ID which is only valid to pay their income taxes by contacting the IRS. On average, undocumented immigrants pay 8% of their income towards taxes, which amounts to $13 billion per year. Undocumented immigrants also pay sales taxes when they buy goods, and property taxes when they pay their rent or mortgage. They also pay into Social Security, though they will never be able to access those benefits.
