Support is building for the New York DREAM Act, a bill would make all immigrants eligible for state tuition assistance for college regardless of immigration status. A mass rally and lobby day for the DREAM Act will be held on March 14 in Albany. So far, 1,200 people have RSVPed that they’ll be heading up there.
Osman Canales at the Long island Immigrant Students Association says that if you want to come up on his group’s bus, the cost is only $15. Click here to access the registration form for the trip or call Osman at 631-888-4300. Their bus is leaving at 6:30am from Brentwood.
The good organizing work around the bill is already winning support around Long Island. Six members of the Assembly from Long Island have already become co-sponsors of the legislation:
Michelle Schimel, Great Neck
Fred W. Thiele, Jr., Bridgehampton
Earlene Hooper, Hempstead
Charles Lavine, Glen Cove
Michael Montesano, Glen Head
Phillip Ramos, Central Islip
It is important that we support these courageous young people trying to learn. They need to see that we all stand with them. Equally important, we must demonstrate that New York is not Alabama, that we value the undocumented student and that we insist that the federal government provide a pathway out of the hell of undocumented status.
Ask your organization, house of worship, union, or local elected officials to support the New York State DREAM Act.
