A question I have been asked a lot lately is “What is going on with Green Light Driver’s Licenses for immigrants?” Actually quite a bit.
As some of you know, the Erie County Clerk in Western New York filed a lawsuit to block implementation of the law passed in June. Rural Migrant Ministries and the New York Immigration Coalition, among several other groups, have made a motion to the court with jurisdiction to be included in the defense of Green Light. We may know more about where this case is headed in October.
In mid-October, the Department of Motor Vehicles is expected to release its implementation plan and regulation for the Green Light law. The New York Immigration Coalition is preparing materials in a dozen languages to explain the implementation to immigrant communities. The Coalition will also offer a training for service providers on the new regulations after they are issued.
