Kris Kobach, who is the Trump transition team’s leader on immigration policy, told Reuters that the Trump administration wants to create a registry of immigrants from Muslim countries. Immigrants and visitors from Muslim countries would be required to register with the Department of Homeland Security and would be called in for interrogations by Homeland Security officers.
Kobach is the author of anti-immigrant laws in a number of states, including Arizona’s “Show Me Your Papers” law. All were struck down as unconstitutional by the courts. Kobach has been working with Team Trump for months and helped author the Republican Platform’s immigration plank.
The Muslim Registry will wrongly stigmatize Muslims and is unlikely to increase security.
