The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) is the premier national event for the Right. Last week’s conference was attended by 10,000 conservatives, Tea Partyers, and neo-cons, along with three of the four Republican presidential candidates. With so many attending, it may have surprised you that one of the speeches that got the most press attention was given by a person you may never have heard of, Peter Brimelow.
Nearly two decades ago, Brimelow authored the best-selling book Alien Nation: Common Sense About America’s Immigration Disaster. In the book, he warned that the United States was being invaded by non-white immigrants and that the white race would be culturally subjugated by an alliance of liberals and Latino and Asian immigrants. In the years since his book made him millions of dollars, Brimelow gained notoriety for being one of the first of the white supremacist “intellectuals” to set up a large web presence. Brimelow started a website called VDARE, named after Virginia Dare, the first white child recorded as having been born in what would become the original 13 colonies. Virginia Dare has a poignancy for racists because she is believed to have been killed by non-whites.
In his writing, Brimelow has called for immigration laws to include race-based quotas that to insure that the majority of future immigrants are white, thereby preserving white cultural superiority.
In addition to publishing his own screeds against non-white immigrants, Brimelow collected a stable of educated racists and anti-Semites to write for his site. His writers have included Jared Taylor, who once wrote that white Americans have to develop a strong racist consciousness for self-preservation:
At its most basic, racial consciousness has as its goal the preservation of a certain people. Its aim is to rekindle among whites what every previous generation until recently so took for granted they did not even give it a name: an instinctive preference for their own people and culture, and a strong desire that they should prosper. I note that every other racial group acts on this healthy instinct and desire. Race realism therefore has no theory of religion, the family, art, or the role of government, except in the very general sense that it expects whites to love, first and foremost, the infinite riches created by European man
The site carries articles from Sam Francis, who once wrote that blacks are “a retrograde species of humanity” and other supremacist authors far to the right of most conservatives.
The conference organizers have said that they allowed Brimelow to speak in spite of public outrage because they did not want to censor a panel, however, the mainstream group GOProud, a conservative LGBT organization, was barred from the event.
