On April 27th and 28th, the Long Island Civic Engagement Table hosted a Movement Building Training event in Hempstead to help build the next generation of leaders for social justice.

LICET was joined by representatives from a number of organizations including Long Island Wins, the Hempstead Hispanic Civic Association, the Center for Popular Democracy, Make the Road New York, New York Communities for Change, New York Civil Liberties Union, La Fuente and Carecen.

There was an excellent turnout at the offices of the Hempstead Hispanic Civic Association as community members and community leaders alike joined together for the common purpose of helping to enact social change.

Events such as these are essential to the social justice movement here on Long Island, as it allows organizations such as Long Island Wins and its allies to reach out to local community members. In order to make a change on a state and national level, you must have strong roots in local communities.

With Hempstead having a substantial Hispanic population, many of the trainers involved with the event were able to cross the language barrier and speak individually with local residents in a way that would not have been possible otherwise.

By the end of the weekend, attendees came away empowered, motivated and excited to fight for positive change in their own neighborhoods. When individuals from different backgrounds come together for the common goal of fighting for social change, everyone on Long Island Wins.
