Long Island Wins Statement on NY DREAM Act’s Exclusion from the State Budget

Governor Andrew Cuomo dealt a devastating blow to New York State students, teachers, parents, and advocates by announcing that the New York State DREAM Act will not be included in the State Budget.

Long Island Wins is profoundly disappointed in this decision. The NY DREAM Act would allow undocumented students to apply for the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and help thousands of New York immigrants, including many on Long Island, realize their dream of earning a college degree. By taking the DREAM Act out of the budget, the Governor has once again failed to fulfill his promise to New York’s hard-working undocumented students.

Economic experts agree that investing in New York’s undocumented youth will only benefit the state. College graduates earn more and pay more taxes than those who only earn a high school diploma.

By turning his back on his promise for the fourth year in a row, the Governor has created unnecessary hardship for undocumented students and has done a disservice to the entire State of New York.
