Long Island Wins Statement on Homeland Security Funding Bill H.R. 240

Bill would help 25,000 to 35,000 Long Island immigrants.

Long Island Wins is deeply disappointed that elected officials continue to waste time on fear-based legislation. The Senate is unlikely to gather the 60 votes needed to pass the bill with the amendments in tact, and the President has already vowed to veto them if it does.

On Wednesday, the 114th Congress moved once again toward attacking immigrants and separating families by voting in favor of a series of amendments to the Homeland Security Appropriations bill that seek in vain to undo President Barack Obama’s administrative relief program and DACA.

These anti-immigrant amendments will not affect the implementation of Obama’s administrative relief program and they do nothing to advance meaningful solutions to our broken immigration system.

Instead of getting mired in vain attempts to pass hateful legislation, Congress needs to work on crafting commonsense immigration reform policies.
