We just received this important message about emergency food relief for some victims of Sandy, including undocumented immigrants:
New York City’s Human Resources Administration has recently received approval to operate a Disaster Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, otherwise known as D-SNAP. D-SNAP, or Disaster Food Stamps, is a one-time benefit that will provide temporary food assistance to individuals and families affected by Hurricane Sandy. D-SNAP is available to affected individuals and families regardless of immigration status.
At the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, we know that Community Based Organizations can quickly and effectively inform their communities of this program. We ask that you widely share the attached flyer with program information, available in English, Spanish, Russian and Chinese. We also ask that you highlight the following important points when communicating with your communities about D-SNAP:
D-SNAP is for individuals and families who were living in ten affected zip codes or two partial zip codes on October 27, 2012 (for the list of zip codes, please view the flyer).
· Current SNAP recipients will automatically receive D-SNAP and do not need to apply.
· Applicants must have disaster related expenses, such as home damage, car damage, hotel expenses, etc.
· Applicants must present proof of identity and residence as of October 27, 2012. Documents regarding income, resources and family composition will be reviewed and verified.
· Applicants or their representatives must apply in person starting on December 12, 2012. Households will have 2 locations to apply:
o Downtown Brooklyn: 495 Clermont Ave., December 12-December 18 2012, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
§ Wednesday, December 12: Only applicants with a last name beginning A-M
§ Thursday, December 13: Only applicants with a last name beginning N-Z
§ All other days are open to all applicants, regardless of last name.
o Staten Island: New Dorp High School, 465 New Dorp Lane, Friday December 14, 4-8 p.m. and Saturday & Sunday, December 15-16, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Monday, December 17, 4-8 p.m.
§ This location is open every day to all applicants regardless of last name
· Again, this program is available to affected individuals and families regardless of immigration status.
