On May 1, at 1:00pm, Long Island Wins alongside the American Studies Department and American Studies Club of SUNY Old Westbury will be co-hosting a special screening of Deputized on campus in S100 of the Natural Sciences building. Admission is free.

In 2008, a group of teenagers attacked and stabbed Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero in Patchogue, Long Island. Lucero died from his wounds, and the white teenager charged with stabbing him was convicted of manslaughter as a hate crime and gang assault. Lucero’s death spurred widespread conversations about anti-Latino prejudices and violence on Long Island. Deputized explores Lucero’s death and the larger context of immigration and anti-immigrant sentiment on Long Island.

We invite you to come and watch the film with us and to continue the important conversation about how to promote inclusion, understanding, and equality in our communities.
