The New York Immigration Coalition asks that you call Long Island Congressional Representatives Rice and Suozzi and ask them to take the human rights of immigrant detainees into account any time there is a vote on funding ICE and Border Patrol:
Over the last fifteen years, since the creation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in 2003, the United States has more than doubled the amount of money we spend enforcing our country’s immigration laws totaling more than $21 billion–more than every other federal law enforcement agency combined. This is money that is being spent to: routinely separate families, both at the border and in the interior of the country; needlessly, and in some cases unlawfully, detain tens of thousands of people every night; racially profile and target immigrant youth; and inflict terror in immigrant communities through large scale worksite and planned raids.
Just in the last month, reports have surfaced of the disgusting and racist comments made by current and former employees of the U.S. Border Patrol, specifically when referencing asylum seekers coming to our southern border seeking refuge.
Please call Tom Suozzi and Kathleen Rice and tell them there should be no increases in funding for ICE and the Border Patrol and that Congress must impose basic human rights protections for detainees in any Appropriations Bill.
