As residents in the Brentwood school district vote to fill three school board positions today, issues like racism and language access will be a foremost concern, along with worries over budget cuts.

Community groups and residents had a chance to vet three of the six school board candidates at a May 9 forum hosted by Long Island Wins, the Long Island Civic Engagement Table, and Noticia, as part of our “Growing a Diverse Long Island” series of events.

At the event, Ruth Negron-Gaines, a member of the Islip Town Branch of the NAACP, spoke about the need for residents to transcend race and work together to better local schools:
