With Donald Trump focusing heavily on immigration in his State of the Union Address tonight, a new Gallup Poll shows that Americans strongly disagree with his anti-immigrant approach.

Six out of ten Americans oppose construction of the Border Wall. That percentage has only grown recently. In June, 57% opposed the Wall compared to 60% today. Most did favor hiring more Border Patrol agents.

81% of those polled agreed with the statement that undocumented immigrants should have “the chance to become U.S. citizens if they meet certain requirements over a period of time.” This Pathway to Citizenship had been a bipartisan proposal before Trump’s election, but over the last two years it has been owned by the Democrats.

The government shutdown appears to have convinced Americans that immigration is the top issue on the national agenda, but they sharply disagree with Donald Trump on what should be done about it.
