Long Islanders will make their voices heard on Speaker Boehner's immigration "principles."

On Wednesday, January 29, at 12pm, Long Island immigrants and their allies will hold a press conference at the offices of Make the Road New York at 1090 Suffolk Ave. in Brentwood to respond to the “principles” for immigration reform being released this week by House Speaker John Boehner.

Groups will express their encouragement for House Republicans who are taking steps toward immigration reform. They will also renew their call for the following principles to be included in any immigration reform legislation:

    Guarantee an inclusive and immediate path to initial legal status and a fair and direct path to citizenship for all 11 million aspiring Americans;
    Protects all workers and respects their rights and due process;
    Keep families together by strengthening the “right to reunite” family provisions and visa programs for future immigrants; and
    Respect the rights and contributions of all, including diversity in the immigration system and equal treatment under the law.

Participating organizations include Long Island Wins, Make the Road New York, New York Communities for Change, Central American Refugee Center, Long Island Civic Engagement Table, American Jewish Committee, and Long Island Jobs with Justice.
