In response to today’s decision to rescind DACA, Long Island Wins Executive Director Maryann Slutsky stated:
“Today, President Donald Trump ended DACA, a decision that is cruel and morally indefensible. It flies in the face of our shared American values of equality and justice for all.
Trump’s callousness and cowardice shows a disturbing lack of compassion for 800,000 young people who were brought to this country as children by their parents through no fault of their own. With their own ambitions, dreams, and desires to work hard, they are American in every way, except for paperwork. Most know no other home than America.
All are now in jeopardy of being deported because these DACA recipients bravely gave all their information to the government in order to be able to work legally, get a drivers license and be temporarily protected from deportation. Now, they are valid targets for ICE and deportation.
Long Island is home to approximately 10,000 DACA recipients. They are our neighbors, co-workers, classmates, and family members. Losing these contributing members of our community will have profound consequences economically, by separating families and disrupting our communities. By ending DACA, Trump is not only punishing DACA recipients, but also our entire community!
Long Island Wins stands in solidarity with our DACA sisters and brothers in every way, continues to fight for what is right and just, and demands Congress pass a clean DREAM Act immediately.”
