In the past year, Long Island Wins has awarded several reporting fellowships for journalists to cover news and culture on Long Island. During the short timespan of the fellowship, we’ve already attracted top-tier reporters, and our past fellows have worked for the BBC, Reuters, and People en Español.

Long Island Wins is now offering a culture reporting fellowship for first- and second-generation immigrant journalists living on Long Island. If you know someone who might be a good fit for the fellowship—recent college grad, blogger, reporter for an ethnic newspaper—pass this posting along to them. This is a great opportunity for non-native English speakers to hone their English-language writing skills, or for print journalists to learn new media skills.

Here are the details:

Long Island Wins Culture Reporting Fellowship Spring 2011

Long Island Wins, a public information campaign covering immigration, is offering a culture reporting fellowship this spring for first- or second-generation immigrant journalists living on Long Island.

As part of its mission, Long Island Wins seeks to educate area residents about the contributions of immigrants to our communities, and a vital part of those contributions are cultural traditions such as food, music, art, and sports. Using print and multimedia reporting, the culture fellow will cover everything from Italian festivals to Argentine tango on Long Island.

The fellow, who will work closely with the Long Island Wins online editor, will be expected to produce at least two 500-word blog posts per week (or equivalent video/audio/photo work), and devote approximately 12-15 hours per week to the posts.

The fellowship will last for three months, and the fellow will receive a $1,250 stipend for her/his service, which amounts to roughly $50 per post.

Recent college graduates, bloggers, and journalists employed by ethnic media are all encouraged to apply. Prospective fellows should be based on Long Island and have access to a car.

For candidates who speak and write English as a second language, the fellowship could serve as an opportunity to strengthen English writing skills, although a good working knowledge of English is necessary.

Minority candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

To apply for the Long Island Wins culture reporting fellowship, please send a cover letter, resume, and three published writing samples to fellowships@longislandwins.com.

The deadline for applicants is April 1, 2011, and the fellowship will begin no later than April 15.

Long Island Wins is an equal opportunity employer.
