More than 400 people turned out for our summit on immigration last month.

On our fourth episode of The Long Island Wins Show on OWWR Old Westbury Web Radio (owwrny.org), Long Island Wins’ Online Editor, Christian Bonawandt, is joined in the studio by Executive Director Maryann Sinclair Slutsky and on the phone by Jason Starr, Nassau County chapter director of the New York Civil Liberties Union. The show recapped some of the exciting outcomes from our hugely successful summit on immigration at Hofstra University, which took place on Feb. 26.

Long Island Wins’ summit on immigration, titled Long Island at a Turning Point—It’s Everyone’s Opportunity, drew more than 400 people from across private, public, and non-profit sectors to address opportunities and challenges for the tens of thousands of Long Islanders who will benefit from President Barack Obama’s administrative relief program. They did this through the development of action items, including establishing workgroups, to continue the work started in each session and help move Long Island forward on immigrant integration and inclusion.

In our conversation, we focused on the education breakout session—one of seven breakout sessions, each of which covered an important aspect of immigration. Starr, who co-facilitated the session, spoke about the action items that were developed and the need to continue the dialog beyond the summit.

The Long Island Wins Show is part of our ongoing effort to find new ways to bring you the latest news on immigration, share immigrant stories, and highlight the critical work the advocacy community is doing to make Long Island a more welcoming and inclusive place to live and work for our new immigrant neighbors.

The Long Island Wins Show broadcasts every Thursday at 12 p.m. from the OWWR studio on the SUNY College at Old Westbury campus (owwrny.org). Tune in on March 19 at 12 p.m. when we will discuss the movement to expand language access on Long Island and why it is critical to all of Long Island’s communities. So please tune in and let us know if you would like to be a guest or would like to hear about a specific immigration topic.
