The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has compiled a list of hate groups across the country in 2016, which has grown by 25 groups since 2015. New York has 47 hate groups, the fourth largest number of hate groups, only behind states like California, Florida and Texas.
The SPLC has identified four hate groups on Long Island. Two of those are the Nassau and Suffolk County chapters of the Ku Klux Klan: the Ku Klos Knights of the Ku Klux Klan in Hempstead, and the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan in Hampton Bays. These groups have spread propaganda in several parts of Long Island, as well as the Suffolk County chapter held a counter-protest to a Black Lives Matter in 2016.
Wolftyr Productions, a small record label in Holbrook is also on the list, because it records and promotes artists who are avowed Nazis. The label also distributes for the Heathen Circle collective magazine, whose mission statement includes “dedicated to promoting pan-European heritage among the people of its descent worldwide.”
The fourth is ACT For America, an anti-Muslim group has two of its chapters on Long Island, one in Lynbrook and one in Hauppauge. The group is anti-Syrian refugees, spreading false information on how Muslims want to implement Sharia law, and are a big proponent of American Exceptionalism.
