Immigrants across Long Island are desperately afraid of what might happen to their families if President Trump’s ICE raids are intensified. Organizations have been responding daily to inquiries from worried immigrants. Here are some upcoming programs where some of the concerns that people have can be addressed.
Thursday March 9th, the Village of Hempstead and CARECEN will be offering a program where the community can find out about police policies related to ICE raids. The mayor and police chief will be there, as will CARECEN attorney Elise Damas. Elise will speak about how the president’s executive orders impact on Hempstead, and the village officials will discuss whether the police will cooperate with ICE. The audience is encouraged to ask questions and press the village on what protections it will offer. The event is in English and Spanish.
When: March 9th, 6:30pm to 8pm
Where: Union Christian Church located at 155 Fulton Avenue (across from Home Depot).
CARECEN is offering workshops on how people can prepare for ICE raids. The workshops will discuss what an ICE raid is like, what a person’s rights are when confronting ICE, and how to make a family plan in case someone is arrested. CARECEN will distribute sample forms giving a trusted friend or relative the power to assist the arrested person’s children. These workshops are offered only in Spanish.
These workshops will be offered at CARECEN’s Hempstead Office at 5pm on the following days:
Thursday, March 9
Friday, March 24
Thursday, April 6
Thursday, April 20
CARECEN Hempstead is located at 91 N. Franklin St. Suite 208 in Hempstead. Call 516-489-8330 for more information.

CARECEN’s Suffolk Office is located at 2000 Brentwood Road in Brentwood.
On April 1st, I will be organizing a program at First Unitarian Congregation in Brooklyn with presentations on the impact of Trump’s immigration policies on Muslim, Haitian, and Latino immigrants and what faith communities can do. Speakers will discuss the Muslim Ban, the future of DACA, racial profiling of immigrants by ICE, and other matters.
When: April 1, 3pm
Where: First Unitarian Congregation, 48 Monroe Pl., Brooklyn, NY 11201
Both Suffolk Community College and SUNY Old Westbury are also planning events around the Trump executive orders. I will be speaking at both. As plans become final, you will be able to find out about them on Long Island Wins events calendar.
If your group would like a speaker from CARECEN on the topics discussed above, please call me at 516-455-5612.
