Jean Kaleda over at Patchogue-Medford Library just sent me a link to the library’s new Spanish-language Facebook page. The page has everything you’d expect, from hours of operation and special events, to greetings from community members supporting the effort, which is perfect.
The point of language-access is not to create special rights for anyone, just to make government entities, like libraries, accessible to the immigrants whose taxes support them. In the private sector, this is called “customer service” and is a key to business growth. Government needs to follow free enterprise and understand that using language to exclude is just bad business.
Kudos to Jean and her co-workers for understanding that welcoming works.
