The new film Deputized is the most complete documentary on the Marcelo Lucero murder. It premieres on Dec. 2 at the Hamptons Take 2 Documentary Festival. Here’s the link for tickets. Here is a fuller description of the film:

Just before midnight on a deceptively peaceful night in a Long Island town, Marcelo Lucero, a 37-year old Ecuadorian immigrant, is assaulted by a group of teenaged boys cruising the street “beaner-hopping,” a term used to describe the ritual of attacking Latinos for sport. The game ends with the fatal stabbing of Lucero, exposing a thinly veiled system of intolerance for immigrants in the community. Seventeen-year old Jeffery Conroy, a popular high school athlete is sentenced to 25 years for a hate crime, while the other involved teens get 5-to-8 years behind bars. Hagedorn explores the crime from a variety of perspectives, probing the lives of the victim, the boys and the socio-cultural conditions that brought them together.

Sue Hagedorn has been making documentary films for ten years. A nurse practitioner, educator and qualitative researcher, Hagedorn uses her background to bring a humanistic and intimate style to filmmaking. She founded Seedworks Films as the action arm of the Seedworks Fund, a private foundation whose mission is seeding social change. Deputized is her first feature-length documentary.
