After passing through the Senate Judiciary Committee late last month, the comprehensive immigration reform bill drafted by the Senate’s “Gang of Eight” will next head to the full Senate floor for debate.
One of the Gang’s key members, New York Senator Chuck Schumer, said this past Sunday that the bill will hit the floor on June 10 and hopefully gain as much as 70 Senate votes by July 4. That would include all of the 50 Senate Democrats as well as nearly half of the Republicans.
Schumer is prepared to consider further amendments to the bill if it would mean boosting Republican support, although not at the expense of damaging the carefully crafted bill.
