During President’s Obama inauguration week Immigrants, DREAMers, Community Leaders, Leaders of Faith and Parents on Long Island, will come together to remind our President to keep Comprehensive Immigration Reform as his top priority for this year. It is clear that in President Obama´s reelection the Latino Vote had a key role, and most of those voters reelected Obama with one main reason; expect him to pass a comprehensive immigration reform this year.
During his first term, President Obama failed to address the immigration issue and we don’t want that to happen again this year. We will keep Obama and Congress accountable. According to the voting records, 71% of the Latino voters voted for Obama. Also 64% of all 2012 voters support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. It is clear that America needs and is demanding comprehensive immigration reform this year. It is time to stop unjust deportations and give undocumented families a chance to keep together. We need to give Dreamers a chance to achieve their education and give back to their communities.
Last year President Obama approved the Deferred Action Program for Childhood Arrivals, but that doesn’t solve the problem. We need a permanent solution and the best solution is a path that will allow undocumented families to obtain their citizenship in order to live here and work without fear deportation.
We are calling also on Senator Schumer to take leadership, to listen to our demands and show us his plan for comprehensive immigration reform this year. As Dreamers, parents, community and faith leaders, we send a strong and clear message to Obama and Congress to ACT NOW.
