An immigration reform bill may finally be unveiled this week. Luckily we are in the middle of a week of activities supporting real change in our immigration laws.
April 10 will be a national day of action for Real Immigration Reform.
Two buses will be heading down from Brentwood to Washington, D.C. for a mass rally for immigration reform. Those buses, which are sponsored by LICET and Make the Road, are already full.
The primary event on Long Island will be at 1:00PM in front of Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy’s office. Rep. McCarthy supports immigration reform and we want to show that we support her.
We will also call on all of Long Island’s representatives in Washington to work for reform that protects immigrant families. We ask that people carry positive signs calling for reform and thanking McCarthy for her support. The rally will be held at 300 Garden City Plaza in Garden City. It will be supported by local groups like La Fuente, LIIA, 32 BJ, Jobs With Justice, CARECEN and the Freeport Trailer.
The evening before on April 9, there will be a vigil for Immigration Reform and to call for an end to deportations. The vigil will take place at 6:00PM at St. John of God Church at 84 Carlton Ave. in Central Islip. The vigil is being organized by the Church and Jobs With justice.
Finally, every supporter of immigration reform should sign the statewide petition for Real Immigration Reform.
