The Trump administration recently published a new rule that would dramatically limit access to legal immigration for working class immigrants. The new Public Charge rule will go into effect on October 15, 2019. The rule may make it harder for those receiving public benefits to become Permanent Residents.
The rule has already caused widespread fear among immigrant communities about accessing programs essential to their health and well-being. The New York Immigration Coalition is working to ensure that service providers have the information and resources they need to support and educate immigrant New Yorkers concerned about how Public Charge might affect them.
The New York Immigration Coalition will hold a training for service providers, community based organizations, religious groups and lawyers and social workers on the new rule. We will review what Public Charge rule entails, and which groups of people need to be concerned with Public Charge and the potential implications.
