A new statement from the White House says President Barack Obama will not take action on immigration reform until after mid-term elections in November, possibly the end of the year.
The move is a complete reversal over comments the president made less than 24 hours ago after a NATO conference in Wales. Obama had been under pressure by some Democrats to delay executive actions on immigration reform until after elections as the issue could cost them votes.
“Because he wants to do this in a way that’s sustainable, the president will take action on immigration before the end of the year,” a White House official said.
