After the Supreme Court decision in June blocking Trump from ending the DACA program as he has been trying to do since 2017, we all waited to see what steps he would take to further hurt DREAMers. Here is what he has done so far:
- The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will continue to accept DACA renewals, but it will not act on first-time initial applications. DHS claims to be reviewing the program, but it is clear that this is just a tactic to prevent new grants of DACA before November.
- Trump announced this week that renewals will only be for one year, and not for the two years granted in the past. This makes the renewal process more costly and will allow the Trump administration to terminate the program more quickly if it wins its court fights.
- As far as I can tell, DHS is not granting Advance Parole to those with DACA. This is the permit that allows those with DACA to travel outside the United States.
The upshot is, Trump is doing everything he can to hurt DREAMers.
