Time is running out for Salvadorans and Haitians to renew their Temporary Protected Status (TPS). The last day for renewals is March 19. Because of recent problems with renewals for other programs, most experts recommend that applications be mailed by March 15.

The Department of Homeland Security has announced that this will be the last renewal of TPS for people from these two countries. Work permits issued under the TPS renewal program will be valid until September 9, 2019.

Currently, CARECEN and Catholic Charities are assisting people renewing their TPS. Both organizations charge a fee for this service. CARECEN may be reached at 516-489-8330 in Nassau and 516-273-8721 in Suffolk. Catholic Charities may be contacted at 631-789-5210.

Those needing help applying should go to an accredited non-profit organization or to an attorney. Call right away, because many groups will stop accepting new cases before the end of this week.

For more information on the program, visit the USCIS website.
