The Long Island Civic Participation Project brings together union and community members to develop and support campaigns that promote dignity and human rights of workers and immigrants in our society. We are hiring a Senior Organizer to continue building our base for immigrant community activism in Hempstead and surrounding areas in Nassau County. Some of our recent accomplishments include:

—A strong campaign for the hiring of more bilingual officers in Nassau County, which was recently boosted by a statement by the Hempstead Village Board of Trustees

—Successful events that highlight the positive contributions of immigrants to Long Island

—Civic engagement of hundreds of immigrant community members through voter registration, civic education, and non-partisan voter mobilization activities

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to build on our accomplishments and lead a team of committed community member leaders to further successes for immigrants and workers on Long Island. The Organizer’s primary resposibilities include:

—Hold monthly committee meetings or other engagement activities

—Do outreach and recruitment via phone calls, mailings, house visits and meetings with union and community members.

—Work closely with members to develop their leadership and create new opportunities for leadership development.

—Build and maintain relationships with local elected officials and community allies in the neighborhood (CBO’s, churches, mosques, parent associations, local coalitions, etc.

—Keep the committee updated on developments around policy issues related to the project’s overall work including immigration, broader campaigns, or local community issues.

—Maintain and update database regularly.

—Attend weekly staff meetings.

—Organize work in coordination with work plans, timelines and work of committee.

—Identify local issues of importance to the community and integrate them into neighborhood campaign work.

—Develop and maintain local campaigns that develop leadership, engage members and create visible change in the community.

—Maintain and foster relationships with local media.

—Help conduct leadership development programs & trainings at the neighborhood and project levels for active union and community members.

—Write regular updates or newsletter articles on work with committee.

Qualifications:

—2-3 years of formal or informal experience organizing with community organizations and/or labor unions;

—Proven ability to work independently with little supervision;

—Prior experience working with or knowledge of the area a plus;

—Coalition building and outreach skills among community institutions, grassroots organizations, unions, churches, service agencies, etc.;

—Team building and leadership development skills;

—Experience implementing grassroots action and policy campaigns;

—Familiarity with software applications in a Windows environment;

—Ability to attend evening and weekend meetings;

—Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation;

—Experience in planning and goal setting;

—Ability to communicate in Spanish and English is required and Haitian Creole would be a plus; and

—Commitment and passion for social justice.

The Long Island Civic Participation Project office is based in Hempstead, but some travel to New York City is required to coordinate with our sister project. LICPP is a project of La Fuente. To apply, please e-mail a cover letter, resume and three references to:
