Note: Long Island Wins is not endorsing any candidates for any of the elections.
Tomorrow, November 5, is Election Day. The polls open from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm, so all of us can find the time to get to our local polling stations and cast our vote.
This is a critical time for Long Island. There are several municipal elections this year, including the races for Nassau County Executive and Nassau and Suffolk County Legislature, which will shape the future of our communities. While Presidential elections tend to get more fanfare, it’s the local elections that really affect our day-to-day lives, determining what our local laws will be and how our tax dollars are spent.
It is our right and our duty as Americans to vote and engage in civic participation. There are people all around the world today that do not have this right, and do not have the right to choose who their government officials are. Our founding fathers fought for us to have these rights, and the men and women in our armed forces continue to fight for our rights and freedoms, including our right to vote.
Last month, Long Island Wins co-hosted two historic candidate forums for several key positions.
We held a forum for Brookhaven Town Supervisor and Suffolk County Legislature’s 7th District at the historic Gordon Heights Fire House. More than 100 community members were in attendance to find out what the candidates had to say about promoting and fostering diverse communities in Suffolk County.
We then held a historic candidate forum for Nassau County Executive in Hempstead, the first time that a forum for County Executive was held in a majority African-American and Hispanic community. Both of these important forums brought the issues facing Long Island’s diverse communities to the forefront.
So please be sure to get out and vote this Election Day, November 5.
