About one in every five New Yorkers is an immigrant. More than half of those is a naturalized U.S. citizen and eligible to vote.

New Americans – immigrants and children of immigrants – account for 17.5% of all registered voters in the state.

An infographic released by the Immigration Policy Center shows just how much influence and power the immigrant population of New York has, in particular Asians and Latinos.

More importantly, the infographic also shows that removing all of the undocumented immigrants from the state would deal a crippling blow to the state’s economy, taking away more than 130,000 jobs and eliminating $28.7 billion in economic activity.

With immigration reform about to be voted on by the senate, the movement must go forward. Anti-immigrant groups are sure to push back as the bill moves forward through Congress, particularly on to the conservative-leaning House of Representatives.

It’s important that all of the facts are known so that our elected officials make the right decision and pass this bill.
