Whether you like to dance or just watch, you’ll likely be transfixed by the colorfully costumed dance troops at the Ecuadorian Andean Festival in Flushing Meadows Park this Saturday, June 23.

Beginning at noon, more than 150 people from different Andean countries will perform dances and music at the park. The main attraction comes onstage at 6pm: Soy Andino (I Am Andean), a dance troop whose members don feathery head garments and traditional embroidered clothing. Here’s a clip from a 2010 performance:

The two-day festival is brought to you by the International Ecuadorian Alliance, an organization that works towards the prevention and decrease of hate crimes while educating people of their civil and human rights.

The event is celebrated every year as part of an initiative to recognize the contributions of South Americans to the art, academics, community building, and politics.

The second day of the festival is focused on fitness. On June 24 at 9pm, the “El Chasqui NY-12” walk/run will take place.

Participants of the walk will receive a free t-shirt and winners will be given a prize, so come out and get your stride or run on. For more information call 646-363-0279 or 347-684-7340 or click here.
