Tragic Shooting in Wisconsin Spurs a Call for Deeper Understanding on Long Island

Yesterday’s shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin is a tragic reminder of the deadly consequences that can result when we allow certain faith groups to be targeted with violent rhetoric and mischaracterizations.

Last night, I attended an interfaith Iftaar at the Islamic Center of Long Island. Iftaar is the evening meal where Muslims break their fast during the holy month of Ramadan. At the gathering, a multitude of faith leaders expressed sorrow and horror over the attack. There was a collective call to promote a deeper understanding of those who live in our communities and the faith traditions they follow. Only then can we break down barriers and build bridges to ensure communities built on respect and dignity that are safe for everyone.
