Whether they’re jawing it up about reggaetón dance moves or the quirks of the Spanish-language news shows, certain comedians have a knack for understanding the intricacies of Latino culture – and then milking it for laughs.
On October 20, you’ll get a sampling of Latino laughmakers at the 3rd Annual Urban Latino Comedy Smash Cover Party at Nassau Community College.

Be prepared to gozar with local comedians Mark Viera, Edgar Rivera, Cory Fernandez, and Sara Contreras taking the stage. Expect this diverse lineup to offer quips and one-liners that many of us can relate to, from the dilemma of aging gracefully to the quirky characters you find in urban neighborhoods.
The event is organized by the Hispanic Heritage Month Committee of Nassau Community College and LI Young Latino Professionals and will help fund scholarships at the college. Hot 97’s DJ Cipha Sounds will host, there will be a performance by Rhythmology Dance Company
There will also be a full Latin buffet dinner, and delicious Latino-themed cupcakes from Brooklyn Cupcakes (think guava con queso and dulce de leche) will be onhand.
One of my personal favorites of the comedians taking the stage is Sara Contreras.

Contreras is known as one of the queens of Latin comedy and this will be her second time at Nassau Community College. Her combination of self-deprecating humor, urban experiences, and emphasis on education separates her from the typical female comedian.
She has a master’s degree in speech pathology, and she uses language to craft jokes that are simultaneously thought provoking, cringe-worthy, and engaging narratives.
Suggested donations for this event are $10 for general admission and $5 for students at the college. The show starts at 7pm. For reservations, call 516-572-7148.
